Based in the heart of Manchester, a vibrant and multicultural city, we are an innovator of art and design education in the UK, and celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2013. As the second oldest design school in Britain, established to provide design training to the manufacturing industry, we offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses that are still very much influenced by the specialist needs of industry to provide our students with the essential skills and knowledge for their chosen career.

Lesley Raven is a senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University within the Manchester School Art. She is Programme Leader for a new degree course: Fashion Art Direction; a hybrid course that spans the disciplines of material and visual cultures, fashion and graphic design; she also co-leads Unit X, wide-ranging cross-disciplinary undergraduate unit that supports collaboration and professional practice development within the creative industries. Lesley is a fine art textile practitioner, a qualified Occupational Therapist and a doctorate researcher at Staffordshire University. She was a senior lecturer and consultant in London for over twenty years and has wide-ranging experience in Higher Education art and design and extensive knowledge of Outreach and Widening Participation. She has managed and directed wide-ranging projects with industry and community partners supporting arts in health, sustainability, community resilience and intergenerational cohesion. Her tripartite professionalism spans art and design, education and healthcare, and informs research into interdisciplinarity and reflective practice to support design innovation and employability.
